Who Are The Homeless?

  • 633,782 homeless people were counted on a single night.
  • As many as 3.5 million2 people experienced homelessness last year – or one out of every 100 citizens. The average American knows 600 people.
  • 40% of homeless men have served in the armed forces.
  • 39% of the homeless are children – more than 1 in 3.

Why Are They Homeless?

  • 8.2 million people want full-time jobs but are stuck in part-time jobs instead.
  • 11.8 million people are unemployed. 1 million have given up looking for jobs.
  • Full-time work at the current minimum wage does not provide sufficient income for a modest rental unit in any county in America.
  • Top causes of homelessness include:
    — Mental illness and lack of services
    — Lack of affordable housing
    — Substance abuse and lack of needed services
    — Low-paying job
    — Domestic violence

We Can Do Better!

  • 22% of all children in the U.S. now live in poverty, an all-time high.
  • Only 3 developed countries have higher child poverty rates: Mexico, Chile and Turkey.
  • The longer a child lives in poverty, the harder it is to escape later.
  • In a 29-city survey of mayors, 27% of people needing emergency food assistance are turned away.
